Album Review: Ellie Goulding - Halcyon

Ellie Goulding - Halcyon

Ellie Goulding has enjoyed a heady ascent in recent years, catalysed by BRITs success and the all-important showcase on Later… with Jools. Despite some shaky critiques, her John Lewis ad cover of Your Song aided this process, as did playing for Wills & Kate. On the album, shimmering strings and choral echoes allow Goulding's melodies to unwind (and mask a little lyrical repetition). ‘Halcyon' is at its best on the anthemic Anything Could Happen and the title track itself, where electric-pop undertones balance beautifully with Goulding's powerfully haunting voice. If she keeps this going, the future looks pretty special - go and see her.
