Revealed: Most dangerous junctions for Cambridge cyclists

A list of the most dangerous road junctions for cyclists in Cambridge has been published, most of which are located in the south-east of the city.

The road junction linking Lensfield Road, Trumpington Street and The Fen Causeway, which is just a step away from Cambridge's Engineering department, is considered the worst in the city, with 36 accidents between 2005 and 2010 involving cyclists and vehicles.Second on the list is the Queen Edith's Way/Fendon Rd/Hills Road Triangle near the Cambridge University School of Clinical Medicine, with 34 accidents.

Cambridge MP, Dr Julian Huppert, told The Cambridge Student: "We are extremely fortunate that cyclists are well-catered for in Cambridge but there is still a great deal more that can be done. That is why we are considering plans to extend 20mph zones across the city's residential streets which will offer greater protection to cyclists and pedestrians alike. The government's decision to give local authorities the power to implement these types of changes without seeking Whitehall approval has made it much easier for councils to act. And the city council has made it a policy to ensure that cyclists are given due consideration when new developments are planned in the city."

He also underlined the importance of constant investment into cycling infrastructure to make roads safer for cyclists and listed priority traffic lights for cyclists, mirrors that allow hauliers to see riders on their near side, safety bars and turning alarms as further safety measures that would improve road junctions with a high accident record.

Coupled with these measures, Huppert said there should also be a "cycling and pedestrian awareness element to the driving test which goes beyond the hazard perception element in the theory test."

He continued: "I will continue to push the government to make the necessary changes to our legislation which will give cyclists the recognition and protection that they deserve and show that we are truly committed to cycling as a serious form of transport."
