Cambridge is finally hosting its own Pride festival

The team behind the Pride event, working under the umbrella of the Pink Festival, are in the early stages of planning colourful celebrations for summer 2018.

Pride Festivals celebrate LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) culture and pride, and promote acceptance and equality. They remain important demonstrations for legal rights such as same-sex marriage.

Every huge festival needs a large team of dedicated organisers, and jobs for the Cambridge Pride Committee were advertised on Twitter earlier this week. Many potential volunteers have already been in touch.

More information was given by Elizabeth Wynn, one of the founding committee members, who told the Cambridge News what can be expected from Cambridge Pride and when it will be in full swing.

The group plan to fund the event through Cambridge Pink Festival, fundraising events and sponsorships.

It is hoped that a working committee of directors and volunteers will have been established by the end of September, with fundraising events will commencing shortly after.

Wynn added: "Working under the umbrella of the Pink Festival we are hoping to start fundraising events soon, their expertise and knowledge about events and how to structure the committee has been invaluable to us."

"We want to create an event which is accessible to everyone, we want to make it enjoyable and colourful but we also want to give people who wouldn't get chance at a larger event the opportunity to perform and get involved."

The committee do not expect Cambridge Pride to rival the scale of larger Pride events such as London or Manchester, but expect the event to be a celebration of the colourful characters of Cambridge.

Those going to the Pride can expect all the party celebrations associated with other Pride festivals such as a parade, poets, musicians and a special UK first event.

Although the committee would like Cambridge at the heart of the celebrations, the event will be open to everyone.
