Madness – Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da
Madness’s latest album seems at first to be rather nostalgic. After the contemplative lyrics of Never Knew Your Name, however, it largely reverts to a more familiar feel. Suggs knowingly implores us to “open up your heart” in the brass-heavy How Can I Tell You, while the carefree Misery is redolent of the Madness of old. However, excluding Death Of A Rude Boy, which atmospherically recaptures their former rhythm, this lack of originality prevents the album from attaining real distinction, unlike the inventive ‘The Liberty Of Norton Folgate’ (2009). Still, La Luna, a disastrous play on Latin music, proves that for this most British of bands, keeping to a tried-and-tested formula is often sensible.
