Maps & Atlases – Beware And Be Grateful

4/5

Track to download: Be Three Years Old

Angular, melodic, energetic and fun. Opener Old And Gray summarises the album: It begins as enjoyably unremarkable indie (slightly indebted to TV On The Radio), lures you into a false sense of security, then suddenly becomes a whole lot more interesting. This is a significant step forward.

M&A have moved away from the Abe Vigoda-ish math-rock complexity of their earlier work and the result is a damn good pop album. Dave Davison’s disconcertingly elastic vocal chords have settled, revealing surprisingly impressive lyrics; “The writing on the wall is under three coats of paint in an apartment we don’t live in any more”.

Excellent stuff.
