Rolo Tomassi – ‘Astraea’

Rolo Tomassi are a Sheffield-based band whose musical style is nothing more than a schizophrenic and brutal blend of sounds, ranging from explosive mathcore fused with Evanescence-esque experimental rock, to acid jazz. ‘Astraea’, although intended to be more “accessible” than the preceding two albums (‘Eternal Youth’ and ‘Cosmology’), is merely an attempt at shoving as many disparate ideas into three minutes as would normally fit in eight. The cacophony produced by the lead vocalist Eva Spence would be enough to keep Ozzy Osbourne himself quiet for an impressive forty minutes! Perhaps, as the name of the album suggests, I ought to do Rolo Tomassi more justice and commend them for pushing the limits of musical experimentation, but the reality is, I am left with nothing more than a banging headache…
