The Magnetic Fields – Love At The Bottom Of The Sea

4/5

Track to download: Andrew In Drag

Maybe it’s journalistic laziness to harp on about 1999’s magnum opus, 69 Love Songs, but Magnetic Fields fans will find that all of the components which made it so compelling are also in evidence on LATBOTS. The distinct mix of cynicism, humour and sentimentality in the lyrics, the brevity (all fifteen tracks are under three minutes long), the combination of electronic and acoustic instruments…

There are a couple of forgettable tracks in the second half, but touching unrequited love songs like Andrew In Drag make up for it. Oh, and one song rhymes “mariachi” with “Saatchi & Saatchi” and “Liberace”, which is pure genius.
