Buns Away!!!

28 April 2011

Celebrated Cambridge cake shop Fitzbillies prepares to reopen under new ownership.

Both the identity of the new owners and the reopening date have yet to be announced but speaking to Cambridge News, Chris Blencowe, Bursar at Pembroke, which owns the Trumpington Street premises said: “We have certainly had strong interest from prospective tenants wanting to trade under that name and in the traditional format. We now need to finalise the contractual arrangements.”

A jubilant Pembroke 2nd-year told The Cambridge Student: “Cambridge literally hasn’t been the same without Fitzbillies – I’m so glad its back.”

Fitzbillies first opened its doors in 1922. Renowned for its sticky Chelsea buns, it was regarded as a Cambridge institution by alumni and current students alike. It closed in February to the dismay of its loyal following. At the time, owner Penny Thomson put the closure down to “very difficult economic times, especially for independent businesses.”
