Cambridge men’s football earn hard-fought draw

Cambridge let slip a 2-1 halftime lead to draw 2-2 with South Wales, Pontypridd and Cardiff at Fenner’s on Wednesday. After two losses in their opening two fixtures, Cambridge picked up the first point of their campaign in the BUCS Premier South division.

The Light Blues started off the match defending deep in their own half, facing strong pressure from the away team. That pressure eventually paid off for the away team after fifteen minutes. A cross was whipped back into the Cambridge box after a corner was cleared, and the host’s defense failed to pick up a header.

Cambridge responded well. Captain Anthony Childs headed in the equaliser from a free-kick. Barely five minutes later, the Light Blues went in front after good work from Rory Griffiths down the flank, and Chris Hutton finished off the fine move.

In the second half, Cambridge were again on the back foot, defending deep for long periods. Fifteen minutes from the end, the away team scored the equaliser when a header at the back post found the net.
