Churchill College celebrated its 50 year anniversary this week by honouring the man it was named after – Sir Winston Churchill. His only surviving child, Lady Soames, planted a tree in the shadow of another tree originally planted by her father at the college’s foundation on 17th October 1959. Lady Soames had previously spoken to the BBC, saying how proud she was to be following in her father’s footsteps. University officials have assured reporters that archives of Churchill’s visit survives in video footage. It records the speech that he made on the day and shows him surrounded by children and onlookers.
