CUSU paid to peddle soft-core porn

8 October 2007

New students expecting the student union freshers’ fair to equip them for life in Cambridge must have been a bit bemused when they opened their free goody bags.

Because among the usual food provisions, advice booklets and flyers, male freshers discovered Cambridge University Students’ Union (CUSU) had given them each a copy of lads’ mag FHM.

But if any of their female counterparts were hoping to see Rachel Stevens wearing not very much, they were out of luck – because instead CUSU deemed a suitable alternative was a free box of tampons.

And while some freshers were delighted with their haul, others were less than enthusiastic.

One male newcomer, an engineering student who perhaps unsurprisingly asked not to be named, said: “They gave the guys something they need and the girls something they need.”

But English fresher Bex said: “I can’t believe it. It’s a throw-back to the time when women were seen to be ruled by their periods.”

And in a final insult to female fair-goers, the boys were given a 420-gram tin of baked beans – while the girls’ effort weighed in at just 220g.

When quizzed if it smacked a little of sexism, fair organisers were quick to blame Pete Brizio, the former CUSU ents officer who arranged for the union to be paid for distributing the free gifts.

Some CUSU officers were so incensed they set about removing the magazines, which showcase skimpily-clad beauties in a variety of provocative poses, from the bags – while other members of the team were spotted taking them home for perusal.

CUSU women’s officer Elly Shepherd said: “It gives a totally wrong impression of the students’ union to be giving out soft-core porn.”

Puzzlingly, the girls’ bags also included chocolate bars – while the men received Colgate Max toothpaste.
