Burial – Kindred

5/5

Track to download: Ashtray Wasp

Burial’s dark and subtle take on electronic music is unparalleled. What separates Kindred from his earlier work is that each 7-11 minute track undergoes almost symphonic shifts in key, rhythm and tone.

Kindred follows a choral synth opening with the rattling bass of a dying record player, underpinned by tribal drums. Ashtray Wasp has three distinct movements; it starts as dark 4×4 garage, but moves to something deeper and coarser as the tempo drops, before reaching a denouement which marries 2-step with the freshness of contemporary UK bass (think Jamie xx, Nicholas Jaar, Pariah).

Kindred is intimate, timeless, and reveals more with each listen.
