Exam success again for Emma

30 September 2007

Emmanuel students proved their academic weight again after topping the Tompkins table of Cambridge colleges for the fourth time in five years.

Almost one in three Emma candidates bagged a first-class result in last year’s tripos exams – cementing the college’s place at number one. The annual ranking is carried out by Peter Tompkins, a maths graduate from Trinity College. His alma mater dropped a place this year to sixth.

Points are awarded according to the class of tripos results, and the table takes into account differences in college size and the number of students studying each subject.

A maximum possible score is then calculated, and colleges are ranked according to how close they come.

Christ’s College jumped five to finish second – and will be gunning to recapture the top spot, which it held for the first 20 years of the table’s publication.

Downing College continued its steady march towards the head of the table – it has taken just four years to jump from 17th to third.

Going in the opposite direction were Gonville and Caius College (down eight at 10th) and Clare, which has slid consistently from its heyday of third in 2002.

Emma senior tutor Dr Richard Barnes praised the college’s exam-takers and said: “As a college, we have fought back amazingly. When Tompkins first published, the only table we topped was for the college with the most cases of mumps – and we fared rather badly in the real one.”
