Is it me, or does something strange happen to time in the mornings? Wake up ten minutes late, and I’m rushing to lectures still half-asleep. If I wake up ten minutes earlier, on the other hand, I seem to have enough time to wash my hair, pack my bag and even make pancakes!
A survey conducted in 2016 found that the average British women spends 38 minutes each morning applying her make-up. That means that you will have spent around two years of your life putting your face on by the time you reach seventy-five. Whether you’re an early-bird or a self-confessed snoozer, few of us have these hours to spare in the morning. However, we still want to look and feel fantastic. Even if you have trouble finding three spare minutes in the morning – let alone 38 – it’s not impossible to keep up with your make-up and moisturising routine. Keep reading for my quick beauty fixes to help you treat yourself to a pamper even amidst that pre-lecture rush!
As in all aspects of life, preparation is key. I don’t mean to sound like your mum, but keeping your bathroom shelves and toiletry bag tidy will make life so much easier. Store the bottles that you use daily, such as facewash, within easy reach. I also like to have an ‘essentials’ make-up bag with the basics I need each morning, and a larger ‘special occasion’ bag containing the rest of my products. This means I’m not wasting time rummaging amongst numerous tubes, jars and pots for my favourite mascara – simplicity is key.
We all know that it’s important to show our skin some TLC, but busy mornings often mean that you haven’t the time to wait for moisturiser to soak in. The solution? Don’t wait! Moisturisers such as ‘Nivea in-shower body moisturiser’ or ‘Sanctuary wet skin moisture miracle absorb’ instantly into the skin, meaning that you can get dressed and go. That’s the skin prepped; now for the face. Wear primer! Apply it even if you are not planning to top with foundation, as it helps to give your skin a natural, healthy glow.
So now that you are polished and primed to perfection, it’s time to add a little make-up. Doubling up is the best way to keep things speedy; products such as tinted moisturiser or lip and cheek stain are ideal because one bottle serves two functions (and it’s a smart way to save money). If you prefer a bolder look, try an eye-popping red or deep plum lipstick. It’s worth taking the time to achieve a slick finish with bold lips, as a neat, sharp lip line will add a professional touch and help to draw attention to one part of your face. What’s more, bright lips are a proven confidence-booster.
As a final flourish, spritz your favourite perfume over your body and hair. Experts also suggest that we spray a few drops on our bellybutton, as this is one of the main areas from which our bodies radiate heat. I would recommend buying the best perfume you can afford, as the scent of quality brands tends to last longer, but the most important thing is that you choose a perfume that makes you feel fresh and ready to face the day.
So there you have it, my top tips for speedy make-up and instant indulgence. There are no more excuses for looking bedraggled and bleary-eyed at nine o’clock lectures now!
