That's so last year: Predicted trends of 2017

2017 has had a wild time so far: last month Theresa May called a general election, while earlier in the year America officially inaugurated Trump as president. And, of course, the new GBBO judges were announced in March. As we approach the mid-point of this tempestuous year, it is the perfect time to reflect on the last few months. What’s hot and what’s not? Which trends have flourished and which have flopped? I have scoured magazines and websites to find the predictions experts made at the end of 2016. Just how accurate have they been so far?


Green living will be here to stay…

‘Waste not want not’ has been drilled into us Britons since the Second World War, but lifestyles which are carbon-neutral, entirely self-sufficient, and produce zero waste are becoming increasingly ‘trendy’. You may do your bit through simple choices like using biodegradable cups or buying ‘wonky’ fruit and veg, or be a more dedicated Green Queen and advocate an entirely waste-free regime, but there’s one thing for sure: this is a trend which must remain.

…but the Swedes might give Hygge the hump.

Hygge, the life philosophy rooted in cosiness and simple pleasures, captivated the country in 2016, as we all snuggled down under cashmere blankets before (often imaginary) roaring fires. Vogue may have predicted that the Swedish concept of ‘lagom’, which means ‘enough’ or ‘sufficient’, would overtake the Danes’ ideas throughout the year, but I can’t see bed socks and hot chocolate being traded for a more frugal way of life anytime soon.


Corsets will be a fashion flop…

Elle magazine predicted that corsets would be out of fashion in 2017, but were they ever a style success in 2016? Do today’s women really want to return to those restrictive garments of the 18th and 19th centuries?

…but you’ll be wearing sportswear instead.

Whether it be leggings, trainers, or sweatshirts, the past few years have seen worn-to-be-seen sportswear infiltrate our everyday wardrobe, and experts forecast that we will be spending more than £8 billion per year on such fitness finery by 2019. The philosophy is certain: brighter is better, and it’s no longer a question of "can I jog in these trainers?", but "does that neon pink stripe really go with the leopard print of my leggings and my electric blue sweatband?"


Insects will be on the menu…

Over the past few years, bugs have been on the radar of restaurant critics, but the editors at Good Food predicted that 2017 would be the year of insect burgers and chocolate-covered crickets. The Mexican chain ‘Wahaca’ now includes grasshoppers in some of its dishes, and the 2016 title of Rude Health’s annual Porridge Champion went to a concoction featuring wood ants and crab apples, but I still can’t see these little critters going mainstream by December.

… and there will be a cauliflower invasion.

Have you noticed that a certain pale, knobbly vegetable is featuring almost daily on your Hall menu? If so, you are not alone – the world is experiencing a love-affair with the cauliflower! The possibilities are endless: cauliflower rice, cauliflower steaks, even cauliflower ‘ice cream’! However, I don’t think Ben and Jerry’s have anything to fear!


… and drones will be the new delivery men.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the insect burger and sports leggings you ordered! Consumer technology is set to develop, as experts predict that customers will receive their online deliveries by drones within the next few years. You may not have seen them whizzing about the sky, but Amazon have already completed a successful trial of its Prime Air drone delivery service right here in Cambridge, and Dominos and Chipotle are also expected to take their delivery system into the sky this year. So, mind your head…

Which trends are set to continue? Only time will tell, but this festive season don’t be surprised if you find ants on your turkey and drones delivering your Christmas shopping!
