Hawking stands down as Lucasian Professor

2 October 2009

World famous scientist Steven Hawking, 67, completed his last day in the position of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics yesterday. Professor Hawking, perhaps best known for his book A Brief History of Time, held the Lucasian Professorship for thirty years.  He remains a fulltime research Fellow of Gonville and Caius College. The physicist and mathematician, who suffers from Motor Neurone Disease, is so valued as a faculty member that colleagues commissioned a 10ft high bronze statue of him last year to be situated near his office.
