Korfball Blues qualifies for national championships

Last weekend, the korfball Blues competed in the British Student Korfball Association Southern Regional Qualifiers. Cambridge hoped to finish at least eighth out of the eleven teams in order to qualify for next term’s national championships.

The morning saw Cambridge finishing second on goal difference in the group stage with three wins against Exeter, Gloucestershire and Kent and a draw against Southampton. This performance guaranteed a place at the nationals.

However, there was tougher opposition in the afternoon against Birmingham (2-2 draw), Bristol (2-1 win) and Cardiff (3-4 loss). Excellent defence and goals from the more experienced players secured third place.

Tom Hodges (9 goals) and Ollie Bell (8 goals) were Cambridge’s top scorers. Two of their goals were amongst the best of the day. Hodges scored with a spectacular half-way line shot while Bell scored an almost effortless running-in shot within the first seven seconds of the Gloucestershire match. Bell was also  named the men’s MVP.

Cambridge’s performance will offer them confidence ahead of February’s Varsity match.
