Lack of wheelchair accessibility cancels Corpus Playroom show

The Relaxed Theatre Company released a statement on Friday morning announcing that their production of Any Little Thing at the Corpus Playroom will be postponed due to a lack of wheelchair accessibility. This was felt to be unworkable for a Company that “puts access at its forefront.”

The statement details how the RTC was trying to build a ramp for wheelchair-users to access the Playroom, as they had an understanding that the venue would be made “wheelchair accessible for the first time in its five year history.” However, they were informed on Wednesday that the building’s Grade II listed status means the ramp cannot be put into use. The RTC takes issue with “local council and the university and their priority in protecting old buildings and attacking disabled people,” rather than with the ADC itself.

Cast member Jamie Sayers shared his disappointment, telling TCS that, "It's important for everyone, even those who aren't involved in theatre, because of what it shows about our society's view of marginalised peoples – which is really what our show and company was trying to change."

The organisers promise that Any Little Thing will eventually be performed, but not on the scheduled date, and at a new venue that has yet to be announced.
