The former French Rugby coach, Bernard Laporte, came to Cambridge last week and met with another team of Les Bleus. He was hosted by the University Rugby Club and was introduced to the Light Blues following introductions from URUFC President, Professor Brian Johnstone and Club Captain Jon Dawson.
Monsieur Laporte was entertained in the Steele-Bodger Room of the clubhouse, being made to real especially welcome by the team’s linguistically minded members, Wellwood and Malaney.
With the reception out of the way, the event and M. Laporte moved to the Cambridge Union, accompanied by the rest of the squad. He addressed the assembled masses and allowed a lively series of questions afterwards. The general line of questioning was, as expected, on rugby and sport in general, although one or two on the nature and future of the EU were thrown as well.
M. Laporte expressed and interest in attending the Varsity match in December and wished the club well for the match.
