Explosion in Cambridge town centre

Cambridge town centre was shaken by an underground explosion earlier today.

The blast hit Fitzroy Street around 1 pm, leading emergency services to evacuate Modelzone, Argos, Specsavers, Caffe Nero, Clement Joscelyne and Solo fashion stores.

Fitzroy Street was closed by the fire service at the Parkers' Piece end, as a second explosion was feared.

Fire Sergeant Marc Rycarte told the Cambridge News: "The explosion was underground and it is believed to have been caused by electrics or gas. We have closed the area for the public's safety and are waiting for the services to come and investigate the cause."

A Jesus student on the street at the time described the explosion as "a kind of dull boom."

No injuries were reported.
