Cambridge Amnesty protests for rejected asylum seekers

Last Saturday members of the Cambridge University Amnesty International (CUAI) and Student Action for Refugees gathered to protest against the government's treatment of refugees.

The students were joined by Cambridge MP Julian Huppert outside Great St. Mary's Church to raise public awareness of their "Let Them Work!" campaign.

The aim of the protest was to pressurise the government to allow asylum seekers, that have been waiting over six months for their cases to be settled, or have been refused asylum but temporarily cannot return home, to enter into employment.

CUAI said many asylum seekers try to work, "but the government won't let them; instead, they are forbidden to work and forced onto survive on as little as £5 a day."
