It has just been announced that Union headliner Sarah Palin has cancelled her speaker event.

Posting on their Facebook page, the Cambridge Union Society said: “We regret to announce that Sarah Palin will not be visiting the Cambridge Union during Lent Term 2015.” They said this was due to “scheduling difficulties”.

However, they put forward the possibility of a future visit, saying “we are exploring potential future dates.”

Palin, the controversial American politician, was the first female Republican to be nominated for the Vice Presidency of the United States in 2008. Recently, she has been starring in her own reality television show ‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska’, and has worked as a political commentator for Fox News. Her recent book, ‘Going Rogue’, has sold over two million copies.

The cancellation follows the news that Buzz Aldrin, the famous former astronaut, has also pulled out of his Union event this term for the second time. It also comes as the Union celebrates its Bicentenery year, which has been marked with celebratory events including a special debate on 8 February.

One Union member, who wished to remain anonymous, was disheartened: “She was the main highlight of the term for me. Obviously this was outside the Union’s control - I’m told this kind of thing happens all the time. But it doesn’t make it any less disappointing. Especially in light of Buzz Aldrin’s cancellation.”

However, another Union member was less sympathetic: “Considering the Union’s extortionate membership fees, having two of the most high-profile speakers pull out in one term is pretty shoddy.”

In reaction to the news, former Union President Tim Squirrell used the news to make an intervention into the ongoing platforming debate. On Twitter he claimed that: “Sarah Palin isn't coming to the @cambridgeunion this term anymore. This would never have happened last term.” Continuing, he explained, in a potentially sarcastic tone, that it was “because I would have No Platformed her. Because I'm an evil fascist.”

More to follow.
