It been revealed that, for the first time, Peterhouse will fly the LGBT+ flag on 1 February to mark the beginning of LGBT+ History Month.

A letter signed by both the JCR and MCR committees was sent to the college’s Master and Fellows requesting that the flag be flown, in recognition of the month-long observance of LGBT+ history, including the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements.

A request made last year by the JCR LGBT+ Officer Julian Sutcliffe to fly the flag was refused, with Peterhouse instead opting to raise its own on 29 February to mark the conclusion of the history month.

At the time, the college website described the Governing Body’s “warm support for the LGBT+ history month initiative”.

It added that “as the College only flies its own flag or, on certain days, national flags, the flying of the College flag is indicative that we are giving our strong support to the LGBT+ history month.”

Sutcliffe expressed his disappointment about last year’s decision in an article for TCS, criticising Cambridge's oldest college for deciding “that tradition was more important than support”.

Discussing this year’s campaign, he said: “Last year it was a very rushed process and we didn’t have time to adequately represent the views of the student body and the arguments we wanted to make.

“This year we went through a democratic process of a JCR open meeting and an MCR survey, which along with a letter signed by both committees was enough to demonstrate to college the strength of feeling towards the move.”

Several colleges flew the LGBT+ flag last year, including Christ’s, Homerton, and King’s.

Gonville and Caius, St John’s, Trinity, and Wolfson were among those that did not.

Sutcliffe told TCS: "I am so pleased that college has decided to reflect on last year's decision, and when shown overwhelming evidence which wishes for this move from the student body, has voted for this gesture which shows their support for Peterhouse's LGBT+ community. It means a huge amount to me as both LGBT+ Officer and a member of the LGBT+ community, and to those I represent, that the rainbow flag will fly over college."
