Following the Graduate Union (GU) presidential by-elections, in which voting took place between Tuesday May 16 and Friday May 19, Darshani Joshi has been elected the new GU president, beating the only other presidential candidate, Declan Maloney.

A member of Hughes Hall and finishing a four-year-long PhD in Physics, Joshi's manifesto included pledges to implement a better of system of seeking help for problems with supervisors, by establishing a confidential advisory service, and advertising a clear complaints procedure and ways to resolve issues. She also promises to promote international cultural exchanges through the graduate student’s festival with multicultural folk dance, music and art.

The Graduate Union President is the primary representative of postgraduate students at the University of Cambridge, and is the chair of the union's Board of Trustees. Joshi will take on the full-time, salaried position as a sabbatical officer - with a salary of £21,507 (subject to inflationary uplift from 2016) - on 15 July 2017, when she takes office.
