One bag, so many stories: a grand V-day gesture

Letting go is the hardest thing. Don’t worry, this isn’t one of those Bridget Jones sob stories where I go into the heartbreaking details of being single amidst a mob of would-be boyfriends. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. This is the story of a thoughtful gesture made by my current beau.

It all started with spring cleaning. There are many things that I love about returning home for the holidays – the sun, my friends and of course a healthy dose of beach life. Sadly, all of this comes with a nagging need, or perhaps the correct term is nagging mother, requiring me to clear some space in the closet. Last summer I faced my biggest purging challenge ever.

Like any sane individual, I have an unhealthy love of denim. Jeans have seen me through landmarks, hallmarks and milestones and are not to be easily forgotten. My favourite, of course, has to be a legendary pair of overalls. I had long since outgrown them and they took to trailing my chins, but that did not deter me from wearing them.

We passed many good years together, forging lifelong memories. So when the time finally came to chuck the denim, needless to say I was distraught. In a moment of chivalry my boyfriend stepped in and offered to make my goodbyes to my beloved denim.

Now comes the part where the romantic in you will get a little teary-eyed. Knowing just how much each pair of jeans meant to me, he decided to give me a piece I could carry around with me always. His skill previously unbeknown to me, he managed to fashion a shoulder bag made entirely out of my old clothes. A concert bag, as I no longer had my concert romper. First response: a little peeved that my clothes − the ones I hold so dear to my heart − had been cut up and used for arts and crafts. But after the initial shock wore off, the gesture warranted admiration in even the most self- proclaimed unmoving individuals such as myself. One can only imagine what he has in store for me this Valentine’s Day − I just can’t wait!
