Oxford University’s global standing at risk

8 October 2009

Oxford University risks losing its international standing unless it receives a £1bn injection to bring its “unfit for purpose” facilities up to standard. The outgoing Vice-Chancellor John Hood gave the warning in his farewell speech saying the University expected to make a loss of £8million this year for the fourth year running.

His warning was reiterated by the incoming Vice-Chancellor Andrew Hamilton, a former provost of Yale, who said the future will not be easy for Oxford. Despite beating Cambridge to the top spot in the domestic rankings this year, Oxford still trails behind Cambridge in the international league tables.
