Racial tensions rise at the University of California

9 March 2010

Students from the University of California protested last week after a noose was found in their university library. Over 300 students gathered for a protest rally at the University’s San Diego campus and some occupied the Chancellor’s office. Tensions were already high following a student party mocking Black History Month. African-Americans make up just 1.6% of the University’s undergraduates. Although a female student has admitted responsibility for the incident and has been suspended, police refused to comment on whether she would be charged with a hate crime. University President, Mark Yudof, criticised the student’s actions as a “despicable expression of racial hatred”.
