Review: Doctor Sleep – Stephen King

Lindsey Askin 21 November 2013

Critical acclaim

Well, it shot straight to #1 on the NYT Best Sellers List.

In its own words

“Aided by a prescient cat, Dan Torrance becomes ‘Dr Sleep’”.

What TCS says

The Lord have mercy on you if you ever survive a Stephen King novel like Danny Torrance did, because King won’t. Redrum, redrum.

Thumbs Up

Everything is articulate, menacing, and acutely realistic about King’s writing. There are three decades between the original Shining and Doctor Sleep, but everything works together seamlessly.

Thumbs Down

The True Knot: a quasi-immortal tribe, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they die, are too surreal in a harrowing universe of restless spirits and alcoholism. The Shining was bloodthirsty ghosts and the ‘shine’. Doctor Sleep replaces ghosts with psychic warfare of good v. evil.
