TCS Music 4 March 2010

SCA Battle of the Bands – Thursday 11th March – Soultree, 8.30pm

Student Community Action (SCA) are hosting a fundraising Battle of the Bands this March. Twenty-eight bands turned up for auditions, with some travelling from as far away as Bristol. A panel of 3 judges struggled but eventually whittled 28 bands down to 5 who will battle it out for an 8-hour studio session.

SCA was established as charity in Cambridge in 1972. This year, they have worked with 450 student volunteers, placing them in over 70 different projects. One current project run for Cambridge students is Big Sibs where Big Siblings are paired with a local child and take their Little Sib out to the local playground, bike riding or even just watching TV.

TCS talks to a couple of the bands who’ve made it to the final…

Ah, you’ve heard of our experimental track “Music in a sentance” heavily influenced by Laurie Anderson. Bom Tish. Our music is like a dark chocolate with a hint of chilli aural sensation; slightly bitter but more-ish, and with a kick inside.

What are your musical influences?

Television, Joy Division, Idaho, The Cure, The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Interpol, Bloc Party, Wintersleep.

What would you record if you win the main prize of a day in a recording studio?

We have an upbeat, dancey new song we’re dying to get down on tape/hard-disk ASAP. It’s giving us a big grin in rehearsals at the moment.

What are your next projects/goals?

We’ll be working towards recording an album of all our material which we can then promote with some more choice gigs. A May Ball performance would be fun!
