Table-topping Tennis Blues

Laura Morrill 4 November 2011

Following one from their one-sided 16-5 Varsity victory, the women’s blues have continued their winning ways at the start of the BUCS Premier League season. This has been particularly impressive as they compete in the top division in the south of England against high performance academy universities and have lost two of last year’s Varsity players. However, with the top four players remaining and the addition of Amy Zhang (Trinity) and Marilena (Trinity), Exeter, UWIC and Bristol have been comfortably beaten 8-4, 10-2 and 10-2 respectively. This has left Cambridge joint top of the table with Bath.

The first match against Exeter saw the team of Laura Morrill (New Hall), Emma Kudzin (captain- Newnham), Kadi Saar (secretary- Trinity) and Amy Zhang get off to a slightly tentative start as the nerves of a new season played their part. Doubles was split leaving it all to play for in the singles. Amy made a perfect start to her CULTC career demolishing her opponent without the loss of a game, which was quickly followed by a solid performance from Kadi, winning at #3. At #1 Laura used all her previous three years of experience to make a fast start against a highly ranked opponent, winning the first set in 25 minutes and eventually coming through 6-1 6-3, securing the 8 points needed for the win. Emma battled gallantly coming back from 0-4 down in the second set to narrowly be beaten in a tiebreak.

Having been pleased to get a win under their belts the team stepped it up a week later against UWIC with Sophie Walker (Peterhouse) coming in for Kadi. A change in doubles pairings paid off with both pairs winning in straight sets. This gave the team the confidence to see off the match with Laura and Amy winning comfortably in less than an hour. With the win secures Sophie completed an impressive 7-5 6-1 victory, and Emma lost another close one with one break in each set leaving the final score 10-2.

The third match against Bristol was no different, with Kadi back in at #3. Laura and Kadi kept their nerve to win their doubles 7-5 7-6, whereas Emma and Amy had a very enjoyable doubles, trying out a variety of doubles formations and winning 6-0 6-1. Kadi and Amy continued their superb form to win their singles easily and secure the victory. Emma finally began to return to the form she was on last year to win her singles in a tight third set whereas Laura battled through her match but eventually succumbed to a migraine and a very good opponent. The final score, 10-2.

With three out of three won, the team heads to an away match against UWIC in high spirits and aiming to win four out of four and remain at the top of the table.

The Women’s Seconds won their first match this week, absolutely demolishing Nottingham Trent 12-0. Ilana Goodman (Seconds captain- Christ’s) and Marilena played brilliantly to win their doubles 6-2 6-3 and their singles in like manner, with Marilena picking up a bagel on the way. New recruits Sam Davie (Newnham) and Tara Jameson (Jesus) played an absolute storm to battle through and win their doubles 6-7 6-4 10-6. Both then continued the fight to win their singles, each winning a close first set tiebreak and an easy second set. This has moved the seconds up in their division and given them a huge confidence boost which they will carry over into next week’s match against Birmingham.
