Enjoy!

1. Take 5/One – Rodrigo y Gabriela

Clever, raw guitar work from Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela creates a delightful new take on two very different genres.

2. Maggot Brain – Funkadelic

A gorgeous, 10 minute, mourning guitar solo by Eddie Hazel. According to legend he was told to play ‘as if his mother had just died’.

3. Transmission 94 – Bonobo

An upbeat instrumental from Bonobo’s wonderfully varied album Days to Come.

4. Fictional Nevada – Venetian Snares

Nothing can prepare you for the second half of this song: tricky time signatures, sudden breaks and unexpected jumps will make your head spin.

5. Pretty Little Ditty – Red Hot Chili Peppers

John Frusciante’s influence on the Chilis is evident in this melodic instrumental from his debut album with the group.

6. The Burrian – Lau

“Best Group in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for two years running, Scottish three-piece Lau has injected a freshness, vitality, vigour and excitement into the UK folk scene”

7. Remember – Acoustic Ladyland

Dubbed the saviours of British jazz a few years back, listen out for the overdriven sax sounds and intricate drumming.

8. Love Like a Sunset Pt. 1 – Phoenix

They’re French! But they sing in English! And they record perfect electro pop songs! Occasionally, though, they take time out to do exceptional instrumentals, like this with its immensely slow build to…nothing. And then a great beat kicks in.

9. Cantaloupe Island – Herbie Hancock

One of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, all Herbie’s music is worth checking out. Here’s just one example for you with a wicked groove and a great melody.

10. Drove through ghosts to get here – 65daysofstatic

65daysofstatic produce mini epics which blend a beautiful detailed sparseness with sonic explosions.
