TCS Revision Playlist: Chilled Edition

Asia Lambert 19 May 2014

In 2012 The Guardian ran a piece online about revision and music stating that ‘nowadays, it is agreed that volume has a greater effect on concentration’ rather than necessarily the presence of musical stimuli itself. With this in mind, I have put together a playlist of revision tracks in order to help entertain your ears whilst your eyes and mind are straining to absorb as much of your hastily scrawled notes as possible: Listen to the playlist on Spotify

1. Illuminated – HURTS

HURTS are one of my favourite (and most overlooked by the public) bands. This track instantly sprung to mind when compiling this list.

2Skinny Love – Bon Iver

This song became mainstream when Birdy covered it back in 2011, however when it comes to revision I feel the original is the best for striking the balance.

3. Higher Love – James Vincent McMorrow

I defy anyone to not find these lyrics and melody haunting; need a moment of quite reflection? Then this is it.

4. Magic – Coldplay

Whilst I’m not the biggest Coldplay fan in the world, their new track fits the bill perfectly. I usuaslly berate them for erring on the side of boring, but when you're looking for something to work to, they can be just what you need.

5. Run – Joel Compass

Joel Compass is a new guy on the block that most of you probably haven’t heard of yet. Over the summer I’m sure that will change though and this should get you in the mood for more.

6. Sleep Sound – Jamie xx

Jamie xx provides unadulterated cool slick with these beats. As the name suggests you could indeed drift off to this track – background noise for working? I think so.

7. Girls – The 1975

Everyone loves a bit of these boys and it certainly provides a little bit of upbeat relief during the depths of study.

8. Feel – Bombay Bicycle Club

BBC came back to life with a bang, and this track combines some of my favourite instrumental sounds with those distinctive vocals. I'll be disappointed if you haven't heard this one already.

9. Coming Home – Kaiser Chiefs

KC returned this year with a brand new album, and this is one of the first tracks to be taken from it. If you only know Ricky Wilson from The Voice – shame on you! – ease yourself in with this new hit. It rounds of your hard day (hour, whatever) nicely.

10. Cassy O’ – George Ezra

I’ve met Mr Ezra and he’s a fine chap. 'Cassy O’ is certainly one to sing along to when you're feeling the blues. Go on, have a little jig too, you've been working hard so you deserve it.
