Last weekend, Cambridge men’s fencing team travelled to Oxford to compete in the first leg of the BUCS Southern Premier League against Imperial, Bristol, UCL and Oxford.
Against Oxford, Cambridge rallied early to take a 45-33 lead from the sabre match. Oxford returned the favour in the foil event and won 43-40. To win, Cambridge needed to score at least 36 points in the épée round, but Oxford carried forward their momentum to take a large lead initially. At this point, Cambridge were forced to chase their opponents but were unable to narrow the points deficit and eventually lost the épée match 45-25, gifting Oxford an overall victory of 121-110.
In the other matches, Cambridge overcame Bristol 132-129 but lost to both UCL and Imperial.
