The hotly-anticipated semi-finals of this year’s University Challenge aired at 8.p.m. on Monday, 27th March, in which teams from rival Cambridge colleges Emmanuel and Wolfson College went head-to-head, for Wolfson to eventually claim victory with a score of 170-140.
In this round, series favourites and team captains Bobby Seagull, a Masters’ Education student of Emmanuel College, and Eric Monkman, a graduate Economics student from Wolfson College, went head-to-head. The two have amassed an impressive following amongst University Challenge fans, Seagull largely for his last name, and Monkman for his intense facial expressions, which leading host Jeremy Paxman has taken to compare with that of “a revivalist preacher”, Radiotimes reports.
The remaining semi-finals round, which will see two teams competing from the University of Edinburgh and Balliol College, Oxford, will air on 3 April. The winning team will go on to face Wolfson College in the finals on 10 April.
