In the latest instalment of the 2016-17 University Challenge, Cambridge’s Emmanuel College and Wolfson College will square off against each other at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 27. This is the first semi-final of the competition, and will ensure that Cambridge has a team in the final for the fourth consecutive year.
The Wolfson College team is led by Eric Monkman, an economics graduate student, while his Emmanuel counterpart is Bobby Seagull, a masters student in education. Both Monkman and Seagull have become series favourites, with Monkman making an instant impression on social media for his intense facial expressions. Seagull, meanwhile, has gained a following for his unusual name, with some on Twitter dubbing it the best name to ever appear on University Challenge. The Emmanuel-Wolfson semi-final is, unsurprisingly, being hotly anticipated by viewers.
The other semi-finalists are the University of Edinburgh and Oxford’s Balliol College, with both teams set to go against each other on April 3. The respective winners of both episodes will eventually face each other to determine the winner of this season’s University Challenge.
The Wolfson-Emmanuel semi-final will be broadcast on BBC Two on March 27, 8 p.m.
