The women’s table tennis team participated in the second round of the top Midlands BUCS League over the past weekend.
After winning five of six matches in the first round, held in November 2013, the team, consisting of Jessy Zhou and Maitreyi Shivkumar, had high hopes for similar success again.
The day started very well, with Cambridge beating Derby, Warwick, and Oxford 5-0. The team unfortunately lost against Nottingham and Nottingham Trent 1. Both players in the opposing team are seeded high in the country, so the intensity and standard of competition was extremely high. Given their strength and skill, Cambridge did exceptionally well to hold their ground, with Zhou taking Nottingham Trent University’s number one seed, Emma Vickers, to a nail-biting decider of a fifth game.
Cambridge managed to finish third in their division, but the whole team’s performance still gives reason to hope for encouraging results in the BUCS Women’s Trophy and the upcoming Varsity.
